What Types of Home Flooring Should I Choose?

Between tiles, PVC, carpet and laminate, there are a number of different types of home flooring, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. In order to decorate all rooms properly, take the time to think about the best alternatives for your specific situation.

Tiles, a great classic

Tiles have many advantages: they are extremely robust, as well as very easy to maintain. Aesthetically, not only do they add a certain cachet to your home, but they also come in many variations, making this choice compatible with absolutely every style and need. There are, of course, timeless tiles that easily match any atmosphere, but it is also possible to opt for more atypical alternatives, which, for example, faithfully reproduce wood or stone.

To stay modern, it is important to know that large tiles are the most popular these days (60 x 60 cm minimum, and ideally even 90 x 90 cm).

Vinyl, both affordable and attractive

Less expensive than tiles, vinyl is almost as easy to maintain. Better still, it is a home floor that can be laid easily, and is available in rolls or click lock planks. Manufacturers are increasingly developing vinyl floors that can be installed in a few moves, which is a real strength compared to the much more technical tiling.

Vinyl floors are made from 100% PVC: like tiles, they are water-resistant and perfect for bathrooms and kitchens. At the same time, click lock planks are generally free of resonance: they provide very good sound insulation. Just like tiles, vinyl floors are available in many styles, and wood imitations have become very popular recently.

Linoleum, an even stronger home floor

Linoleum is often confused with vinyl flooring. But it is important to understand that linoleum is more rigid than PVC vinyl and is made from natural materials such as linseed oil, resin with natural pigments and cork.

If you want a more durable floor covering, it may be worthwhile to choose linoleum over the cheaper but less durable vinyl.

Carpet, a surprising comeback for this home floor

It was thought to be out of fashion, but carpet is slowly making a comeback in our homes, notably because manufacturers have managed to innovate. It is appreciated for its warmth and coziness, and there is now a wide range of products to choose from, made of natural or synthetic materials.

More and more people want to have a reassuring, warm and soothing interior. This is why carpeting is being reused, knowing that, if it is well cared for, it does not necessarily contain any more mites than a conventional home floor.

Parquet, a timeless floor

Though it costs more to install a parquet floor, it is a long-term investment. Wooden flooring is durable and can even be renovated several times. It will remain for decades without any problems.

There are different types of wood flooring: unfinished and customizable, varnished and easier to maintain, oiled or waxed. It is important to be familiar with all these alternatives before making your choice, as they all have their own particularities in terms of appearance, maintenance and durability.
